WOW is usually the first word said when
you get out of the plane. Why? There are no words to describe the feeling of
being at one with the air. Trike flying like it's earlier cousin Hang Gliding
puts the feel of the very air you are flying in at your finger tips. You will
experience the freedom of three dimensional travel with the similarity to
that of the birds around us.
So you
want to learn to fly…
You have thought
about it for years, looked to the sky so many times and wished you could be up
there, wondered what it must be like to be looking down on the earth and all
those poor people still stuck to it. You have heard those words
“Just Do It!”
so many times and you have finally decided the time is
NOW!
How do
you go about it?
Well there are a
number of options open to you. You can take an introductory flight, a few
lessons over a weekend or a whole course over a week or two week period - all
instruction is to ASC (Aero Sports
Connection) license standard. We are a ASC approved flight school with a
full time ASC certified flight instructor with over 20 years experience in
trikes.
Introductory Flight Lesson
Get the feel of what
trike flight is all about. We know you will love it but to be sure just arrange
an introductory flight to see if trike flying is for you. Our typical intro
flights last 30-40 minutes, and during this time the prospective pilot can
experience first hand the complete freedom that only flight allows, especially
trike flight. You will be allowed to take over the controls and steer yourself
around the sky, once your instructor has demonstrated the basics. This will be
a truly exhilarating experience and more fun than you ever thought possible with
your clothes on.
Weekend
Flight School
In our weekend
flight school you will be given as many flight hours as you can safely handle,
and the weather will allow. This will familiarize the student with basic
aircraft operating procedures and the flying characteristics of the trike. From
experience we know that the average student cannot take more than 3 hrs of
flight time per day. At the end of your weekend you will have a good grasp of
what trike flight entails and have a good foundation to build on in your future
flight training.
Week-long Flying Program
The week long flying
program will allow you to fly mornings and evenings in the best conditions to
maximize your time during your week. As your ability level increases you may
well take a few flights up in the afternoon thermals and bumps so you can
experience what hot summer afternoon flying conditions are like. Although most
low time pilots choose not to fly at this time of the day, in fact most
ultralight pilots don’t fly at this time of the day, you will gain the necessary
experience to feel comfortable in such conditions, though you may not be too
happy staying up there. This way should you in the future get caught out in such
conditions during a flight, you will not instantly feel terrified and lapse into
the white knuckle mode and steel grip on the bar, which will make more work for
yourself than is necessary. At the end of your week the average student pilot
will be well on their way towards their solo flight.
During your week some of the
topics to be covered will be Aircraft familiarization, pre-flight inspection,
pre-start of engine and pre-take off procedures, principles of flight, rules of
the air, Taxiing and control of the aircraft on the ground, basic meteorology,
radio usage where applicable, basic navigation, safe take off procedures,
straight and level flight, holding a ground track, crabbing, medium level turns,
climbing and descending including while turning, circuits, landing and
touch-and-go plus stalls and steeper turns. Of course subject to weather and
the students stamina, more than or less of the above will be covered.
Advanced
flight Training
For those already
comfortable with basic flight and a registered pilot with one of the three
organizations (USUA, EAA, ASC) we offer advanced flight training. This can be
as simple as familiarity with steeper turns, safe low level flying, cross
country navigation, advanced force landing procedures from dead stick, and
airport pattern and radio work to flying in adverse wind and weather conditions
(strong winds, thermals, strong cross winds) rotors over close trees when
landing, midday thermal soaring and how to spot and recognize them from ground
detail and in the air, recovery from unusual attitudes, short field landings and
take off and eventually close formation flying. For those of you ready to begin
advance flight training you will be shown a whole new level of flight that will
expand your enjoyment and ability levels to plateaus you never knew existed. For
those that want to push the envelope however we are not the school, here at NJ
Ultralights safety and the safe operation of your aircraft are of paramount
importance.
BFI
Basic Instructor Course
Many pilots once
sufficient time is under their belts, wish to go on to train to be instructors.
At NJ Ultralights we also offer this training, but be warned, don’t come here
unless you are sure your flying ability is unquestionable. You should be able
to competently demonstrate all flight maneuvers and explain as you go. Our
flight school is not like many weekend schools, poor quality schools where you
just fly around the sky for 15 hours and then buy your instructor’s rating.
Here you will work hard for it, become a far better pilot than you ever imagined
and then go on to be one of the very few… very good flight instructors out there
in the world.
We will teach you how to
spot mistakes early on in a student’s flying, how to properly correct them,
experience what can happen to you from a student’s actions and just how quickly
a student on board that is less than competent can put you in a life threatening
situation and how to get yourself out of these potential deadly situations. You
will learn tips and techniques to get the student comfortable in bumpy air and
overcome those line up and round out mistakes.
When completed you will
leave with a new era of confidence and skill level that you never thought you
even had in you. You will be proud to demonstrate your skills any time and
anywhere and go on to pass down those abilities to your future students for a
long time to come.
Aircraft
Safety
During the many
years that trikes have been flown around the world they have come to be know as
the safest and most economic form of recreational aviation available. They have
an enviable and proven safety record the world over.
All our tikes are certified
aircraft that must conform to structural and performance standards laid down by
the CAA of their respective countries of origin. These strict standards mean
that this type of aircraft is as strong and in some cases stronger than
conventional or GA aircraft.
With no discernable stall,
virtually impossible to spin, no moving parts to speak of in the airframe
controls and all turns being self coordinating, the trike is as safe as it is
fun to fly. There is no need to be concerned with C of G balance because it is
self-centering and breakdown and pack up is easy with one person. They handle
rough air better than a 3-axis, give a smoother flight and will out maneuver any
3-axis aircraft. Transportation and storage is where they excel as aircraft.
Nothing else on the market with comparable performance can come close.
So book a trial flight with
our very experienced instructor and have the time of your life. We have all
dreamed of flight at some time, but to be in control yourself and guide yourself
around the sky at will is something very special indeed. Every pilot knows this
feeling and everyone one who has ever taken an intro flight has remembered it.
Take this opportunity and book your flight even if you only try it once, you
will never regret it. Even if you never take the controls of an aircraft the
rest of your life you will walk on the earth, cast a glance at the sky, and
smile knowingly inside. Because there you once were and there you will forever
more, long to be.
